B&E Trailer Training - from TopGear
Are you legal?
To tow a trailer, caravan, boat, horse box etc. over a certain weight, you will need to add Category E to your car licence (Cat B). This means passing another driving test with a trailer before you can go on the road.
Practise makes perfect
If you passed your driving test before 1997 you probably already have Category B+E on your licence. This means you don't have to take a test before towing. However, if you've never towed anything it makes sense to get some quality training to ensure you are safe. It's not as easy as it may look!
At TopGear we offer:
- High quality training to test standard
- Personal attention from a family business
- Training options to meet your needs
- DSA Approved Driving Instructors
- Competitive prices giving excellent value
TopGear School of Motoring started in 1992, is owned and run by Danny and Bev Harrison and has become the largest driver training school in South Cumbria. Success has been built on the quality of our instructors. We tailor our training to you.
It's 'B plus E' so don't forget the 'B'!
To add Cat E towing trailers to your Cat B car licence you have to take another driving test. So as well as good control and handling of trailers, your normal driving skills need to be up to standard. Could you pass your driving test again? You're not starting from scratch and we won't treat you like a learner, but you do need to be quite precise. It can be a useful experience revisiting your driving skills and checking what habits you've developed.
Pick your option
Refresher Training
Ideal if you have plenty of towing experience, can reverse, and your driving skills are at a good level, or if you have recently failed the trailer test.
2 Days £295
Standard Course
If you've had some towing experience and aren't too worried about reversing, plus your driving skills are at least fair, then this is ideal.
3 Days £449
Full Training
Ideal if you haven't towed before or have tried but struggled with reversing, and/or your driving skills could do with some refreshing.
4 Days £589
Current B+E Holder
If you already hold Cat B+E and don't need to take the test, but are new to towing, it makes sense to learn how to tow safely. It can be easy to get it wrong, leading to vehicle damage or personal injury while handling, or a serious accident on the road.
Choose how many days you need based on your experience. 3 days should be enough for most people to become competent at handling and manoeuvering a trailer. Costs as the other options.
Notes: Additional training days are available at £155 per day. The DSA test fee is payable to book a test and is currently £115. The options leading to taking a test include the use of our vehicle and trailer for both the training and the test itself.
